Daniel, you've probably considered this more recently than anyone else. Thoughts?

This looks sensible. I've been unplugged most of this week but will be back at the desk to verify/merge/etc on Monday. Thanks for pinging me. Will take care of it first thing this coming week :)

This has been applied in 5.5 with the following commit:

https://github.com/php/php-src/commit/640214701c9cf259c899d283ea769b3045d2553c

The xp_ssl.c file changed significantly in 5.6 and the appropriate modifications have been merged as needed.

Finally, as there was no name listed with this report (only an email address) I was unable to add your name to the relevant NEWS file entries. If this bothers you please let me know via my php.net address and I'll be happy to add it after the fact.

Thanks again for your submission.
