This looks sensible. I've been unplugged most of this week but will be back at the desk to verify/merge/etc on Monday. Thanks for pinging me. Will take care of it first thing this coming week :)
This has been applied in 5.5 with the following commit:
The xp_ssl.c file changed significantly in 5.6 and the appropriate modifications have been merged as needed.
