Try code:

$dir = "/somewhere/on/my/drive";
$res = opendir( $dir );
echo "\$dir=$dir, \$res = $res\n";

returns:
$dir=/somewhere/on/my/drive, $res = Resource ID #1

(/somewhere/on/my/drive is not a real directory.

On linux, the same code returns a false;
