./configure --prefix=/opt/php4 ... --with-zlib-dir=/usr --with-zlib=/usr ...

...
checking for compress in -lz... yes
...
checking for gzgets in -lz... no
configure: error: Zlib module requires zlib >= 1.0.9.

Environment:
gcc 2.95.2
/usr/include
/usr/include/zconf.h
/usr/include/zlib.h
/usr/lib
/usr/lib/libz.a
/usr/lib/libz.so
/usr/lib/libz.so.1
/usr/lib/libz.so.1.1.3

libz.a as well as libz.so contain gzgets() for sure and compilation of:
#include "confdefs.h"
char gzgets();int main() { gzgets() ; return 0; }

compiles without any errors linked against -lz and returns 0. There are no other libz s on the system.

So why complains configure about not having gzgets() ?
Any hints, how to fix/debug that problem ?

Have a look at the end of your config.log, there should be the full error message of the compiler/linker, why the zlib test compile fails.

Often there are unresolved dependencies from libraries used by other extensions (which don't do a test compile run), so if a fix isn't obviously through looking at the end of config.log, please update this bug report with the error of the zlib test compile from config.log and your complete (!) configure line.
