Not really a bug, more an undocumented feature. Since I rely on this, I'd like to see this documented. At the moment I'm not really sure if it's reliable and/or dependent on some specific version of something.

It was added in PHP Version 5.3.7. See http://php.net/ChangeLog-5.php
