Please check whether all versions you tested this on use the bundled PCRE library. If you are using an external library and it's configured in some non-standard way there is nothing we can do about it.

According to http://3v4l.org/aEugD every version of PHP all the way back to 4.3.0 returns 0 for that line of code. But, this sounds more like a LOCALE issue, or perhaps as Nikic suggests PHP being linked against some weirdly built libpcre.
So we are going to need a bit more info to do anything about this. From the systems that don't return 0 get their full phpinfo() output.

I'm not familiar with a "LOCALE" affecting the results of preg_match().  Could you elaborate on that?

Also, regarding locale, having a locale-sensitive ASCII behavior would seem to contradict the PCRE manual,

"Characters  with  values  greater  than  128 never  match  \d,  \s,  or  \w,  and always match \D, \S, and \W."
