Installation done in /usr/local/php4

./configure  --with-apxs --with-jpeg-dir --with-tiff-dir --enable-calendar --enable-ftp --with-imap --with-pgsql --enable-trans-sid --enable-versioning.
make 
make install

Had to manually copy file /usr/local/php4/php-4.0.2/libs/libphp4.so to /etc/httpd/lib/apache/

while restarting apache the message that comes are :
Cannot load /etc/httpd/lib/apache/libphp4.so into server: /etc/httpd/lib/apache/libph4.so: undefined symbol: gss_mech_krb5

Use --with-kerberos.
