I'm not sure if this is a bug report or a request, feel free to recategorize.

The module installed fine and I added a php service file to /etc/pam.d. Unfortunately pam_auth() fails with "Authentication failure". Needless to say the username and password were correct and other PAM services are working fine.

Since successful pam_start, pam_authenticate, and pam_acct_mgmt were tested in the same if-clause, I splitted the tests to find out that it's indeed pam_authenticate that is failing.

One request is to return different error messages depending on the failed pam_* function. But more important is to find out what pam_auth() fails at all. Is there any more debugging possible to find out why and where that happens?

Please read the section "I'm getting an Authentication Failure error, why?" at

I'll have a look at splitting the calls to pam_* and returning error messages such as "Authentication failure (pam_authenticate)" for the next release.

end of next Sunday (CET) on

In case this was a website problem, the change will show
