This one crashed my box ..
or at least made it unavailable for may hours (at least five hours)
(= no more way to connect to for example ssh,telnet,apache)

I'm tempted to say "Don't do that." :-)

I guess you should file a bug report, though, since whatever it does, it
shouldn't crash your box...

Can you povide a backtrace or something? I was
unable to reproduce this...
Tried:
Apache module on Linux and Solaris 2.6
CGI on Linux and Solaris 2.6

It's possible any of these were later than 4.0.1 pl2.
Either way, a backtrace would go a long ways.
