System: WIN NT 4.0 SERVER US English, Option Pack 4.0 with IIS 4.0, Service Pack 6a PHP 4.0.1pl2 as CGI Until version 3.0.16 system() and related functions properly did output any response of the executed commands. (for system() at least the last line of the response) From 4.0.0 on that doesn't work anymore. How come? Will this be fixed or do I have to stick with 3.0.16 (I'd rather like to use the new features like sessions and so on in version 4) Does this have to do with the new implementation of the output buffering? so doesn?t system('dir'); work for you? I?m on Win2k and it works, you just need to output the returned value. If I want to supress it I turn ob_buffering on... watch you php.ini if it?s turned on, if it is, turn it off and try again... for debuggin scripts you should turn implicit_flush=on, then you?ll get every result printeduser feedback: BD> so doesn?t BD> system('dir'); BD> work for you? Nope. Neither do exec() or passthru() return any output. I tried it on WIN NT 4.0/IIS 4 and on W2K/IIS 5, in both cases PHP is running as CGI. BD> I?m on Win2k and it works, you just need to output the returned value. $test_out=system("dir"); echo $testout; - nothing. And actually, as far as I dig it, system() returns AND outputs automatically at least the last line of the commands' output. (give it a try under unix: system("ls -la"); prints out the whole directory content in one line. What is going wrong then? It worked perfectly from 3.0.12 to 3.0.16! BD> If I want to supress it I turn ob_buffering on... I tried EVERYTHING that has to do with buffering. No chance. BD> watch you php.ini if it?s turned on, if it is, turn it off and try again... Did that more than once. BD> for debuggin scripts you should turn implicit_flush=on, then you?ll get every result printed Not even then. No output. How come it works for your system? Something MUST be different... let's find it out, if you like! In our Intranet apps I work a lot with system(), but I would like to use the new features of Ver 4 as well...Here you go: [PHP] ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; ; Language Options ; ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; engine = On ; Enable the PHP scripting language engine under Apache short_open_tag = On ; allow the <? tag. otherwise, only <?php and <script> tags are recognized. asp_tags = Off ; allow ASP-style <% %> tags precision = 14 ; number of significant digits displayed in floating point numbers y2k_compliance = Off ; whether to be year 2000 compliant (will cause problems with non y2k compliant browsers) output_buffering = Off ; Output buffering allows you to send header lines (including cookies) ; even after you send body content, in the price of slowing PHP's ; output layer a bit. ; You can enable output buffering by in runtime by calling the output ; buffering functions, or enable output buffering for all files ; by setting this directive to On. implicit_flush = Off ; Implicit flush tells PHP to tell the output layer to flush itself ; automatically after every output block.
