In Japanese translation phpdoc/ja/trunk/reference/mbstring/supported-encodings.xml,
the paragraph that describes "auto" encoding is out of sync with English version.

English:
If "auto" is set, it is expanded to the list of encodings defined per the NLS. For instance, if the NLS is set to Japanese, the value is assumed to be "ASCII,JIS,UTF-8,EUC-JP,SJIS".

Japanese:
"auto" が指定された場合、この文字列は "ASCII,JIS,UTF-8,EUC-JP,SJIS" に変換されます。

which for example should be:
"auto" が指定された場合、この文字列は言語設定(NLS)毎に定義されたエンコーディングのリストに変換されます。例えば、言語設定が Japanese の場合は "ASCII,JIS,UTF-8,EUC-JP,SJIS" です。
