I had a problem with json_decode() that it returned NULL via _GET even though the JSON was valid. Turns out that the JSON string has to be UTF-8 encoded (thanks to the commenter). This should be mentioned in the docs in the parameter breakdown.

This bug has been fixed in the documentation's XML sources. Since the
online and downloadable versions of the documentation need some time
to get updated, we would like to ask you to be a bit patient.
