Description:
------------
Extended version of CHM manual illustrated the most advanced usage of CHM on the web. It would still be nice to be able to download it. It was named php_manual_chm.zip

It contains severely outdated information and does us more harm then good.

If you really really want it, then you'll need to look into some archives, but we
cannot and will not advocate using several years old documentations.

Let me disagree with you. I think it deserves to be placed at least at http://museum.php.net/

Seems like Richard took the trouble and re-implemented the extended CHM into PhD.

We are having some trouble with copying it over to the rsync box so it can be
synced to the mirrors though.. Looking into it at

The new enhanced chm format includes the user notes, like the old "extended" chm
file. It does not include ability for the
end user to create alternative "skins" for the CHM file.

It was also a lot easier to simply incorporate the user notes into the main body
of the HTML than to have 2 separate CHM
files (manual and notes) and then to use JavaScript to merge the content like
the old extended CHM files.

As it stands, there is nothing else to be done new enhanced format with regard
to the user notes.

When the new PHP website re-styling is complete, the finalised styling will be
incorporated into the CHM files. This is
all ready to go. If you are in a position to build your own CHM files, then you
take a look at
http://svn.php.net/viewvc/phpdoc/doc-base/trunk/scripts/build-chms.php?
revision=310810&view=markup#l187 to see how to
include the current styling into the CHM files.

I'd still place it into museum for PHP4. CSS styling was awesome. IIRC comments
were split, because of CHM size limitations.

I don't think it was CHM size limitations, but the download size issues (though
broadband is certainly more prevalent now). The underlying technology hasn't
changed and the user notes only increases the CHM file size by 230%. As for
including it in the museum, I'd be very worried about including it due to the very
outdated information contained in it. Also, the mechanism used for styling removed
any found search results. It wasn't ideal and I was unable to find a solution to
preserve the found/highlighted search terms as well as allowing the custom
styling. So, flawed and outdated. Not an ideal candidate for the museum.

Lol. What kind of information do you expect in museum? =)

I believe xCHM manual significantly contributed to making PHP4 popular on Windows.
Yes, it got heavy and outdated with time, and it is no more actual nowadays. I
spend a lot of time trying to resurrect it, and for me it would be nice to have it
zipped online for the history.
