In the reference manual dated 2010-02-05 (but also in the current online version), the page for imagecreatetruecolor says: "Note: This function will not work with GIF file formats."

That is incorrect. You can output GIF image files from truecolor GD images.  GD internally converts the image to a palette image with a maximum of 256 colors and creates the GIF from that.

I suggest either deleting the note, or replacing it with something like this: "Note: GIF files can be produced from true-color images. PHP will convert the true-color image to a palette image with a maximum of 256 colors, and then output the result in GIF format."

I can't see anywhere on the imagecreatetruecolor() page that it says it doesn't work with GIF's

This bug has been fixed in the documentation's XML sources. Since the
online and downloadable versions of the documentation need some time
to get updated, we would like to ask you to be a bit patient.
