Did

#./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs
#make
#make install

as described in the INSTALL notes.

the make succeeds but builds libphp4.a & libphp4.la rather tha libphp4.so.

APXS therefore fails when trying to install.

Does this problem still persist with more recent version of php (from CVS or http://snaps.php.net) ??

And try adding the full path for apxs into --with-apxs
