Bug #4829 Link Failure
Submitted: 2000-06-05 18:48 UTC Modified: 2000-07-23 01:10 UTC
From: gummo at appleonline dot net Assigned:
Status: Closed Package: Compile Failure
PHP Version: 4.0.0 Release OS: Mac OS X - DP4 (Darwin1.1)
Private report: No CVE-ID: None

A few problems:

First, I had to patch configure with the command 'cp /usr/libexec/config.* .' to get configure to recognize the OS.

Then, it would't compile AT ALL with mysql support enabled.

Second, after disabling mysql, and running make, the compile fails with the following error:

/usr/bin/ld: multiple definitions of symbol _ap_os_is_path_absolute
.libs/libphp4.lax/libsapi.al/mod_php4.lo definition of _ap_os_is_path_absolute in section (__TEXT,__text)
.libs/libphp4.lax/libsapi.al/php_apache.lo definition of _ap_os_is_path_absolute in section (__TEXT,__text)
.libs/libphp4.lax/libsapi.al/sapi_apache.lo definition of _ap_os_is_path_absolute in section (__TEXT,__text)
make[1]: *** [libphp4.la] Error 1
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

which I can not get past. If anyone has any luck with this, or running on darwin please let me know. TIA

-Rob

I've been able to locate the bug, which resides in three files in the [phpdir]/sapi/apache folder: mod_php4.c, php_apache.c and sapi_apache.c which all include the file 'ap_config.h' which includes 'os.h'

Confused? So was I.

So, when the three files are compiled into their 'objects' each contains a reference to the same function '_ap_os_is_path_absolute' (which can be found in os.h) and libtool (the linker) won't combine the three files into libphp4.la because it can't have three copies of the same symbol at once. Thus, it dies (or continues without telling you) and you're back to square one. I've been at this for a week, and am ready to toss my powerbook into the trash.

I've all but given up, but I'm going to try and update my libtool, and hope that that does the trick. If you have any other ideas, please let me know.

Please reopen when you're convinced this is a php bug.
Well, relatively sure anyway. :)
