If you defined your own http protocol wrapper with the stream_wrapper_register function. The method call (http) does not use it. However the SoapClient uses the new wrapper to retrieve the WSDL file.

So my conclusion :
 - SoapClient read using the wrapper
 - SoapClient write/send using its own methods
