php -l: "On success [...] the shell return code is 0. On failure, [...] the shell return code is set to 255."

This doesn't seem to be true, at least not on Windows.

This bug has been fixed in the documentation's XML sources. Since the
online and downloadable versions of the documentation need some time
to get updated, we would like to ask you to be a bit patient.

Thank you for the report, and for helping us make our documentation better.

It is PHP internal's FAILURE which is defined to -1.
