"To retrieve the number of rows affected by a INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE query, use mysql_affected_rows().

But mysql_affected_rows also works for REPLACE statements.

same in mysql_affected_rows:
"Get the number of affected rows by the last INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE query associated with link_identifier."

has to be:

"Get the number of affected rows by the last INSERT, UPDATE, REPLACE or DELETE query associated with link_identifier."
