When I run :
configure --activate-module=src/modules/php3/libphp3.a
I get :
/usr/i486-unknown-linux-gnulibc1/bin/ld:
cannot open -lmysqlclient: No such file or directory

What's wrong any suggestions ?

This works fine for me with Apache 1.3b6 and MySQL.  You probably did not point PHP at the correct place when you told it where to find your MySQL installation.

On my system I simply use --with-mysql when I configure PHP.  You may need to use --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql or something similar depending on where your libmysqlclient.a file is located.  If it is in /usr/local/lib/mysql then just use --with-mysql.
