My system successfully compiles and installs PHP3 (ie. my system works, and I've compiled PHP3 many times before). However, with 4.0B3 I did:

$ ./configure --with-java=/usr/local/jdk1.1.8 --with-pgsql --with-apache=../apache_1.3.x --enable-track-vars

Works fine

$ make

Works fine

$ make install (as root - Here is the part that goes wrong)

mkdir -p /usr/home/sabre/download/apache/apache_1.3.9/src/modules/php4; cp libs/libphp4.a /usr/home/sabre/download/apache/apache_1.3.9/src/modules/php4/libmodphp4.a; cp ./sapi/apache/mod_php4.* sapi/apache/libphp4.module /usr/home/sabre/download/apache/apache_1.3.9/src/modules/php4; cp ./apMakefile.tmpl /usr/home/sabre/download/apache/apache_1.3.9/src/modules/php4/Makefile.tmpl; cp ./apMakefile.libdir /usr/home/sabre/download/apache/apache_1.3.9/src/modules/php4/Makefile.libdir
cp: libs/libphp4.a: No such file or directory
*** Error code 1

Stop.

My analysis is that for some reason the libs/libphp4.a isn't
created during compile time and the install script can't find it.
