The favicon used on php.net is invalid and is originally a .bmp-file with a .ico file extension. E.g. Opera and Firefox have problems with invalid favicons and cannot display them.

I have just tested our site with Opera 7.50, Firefox 1.0 and Mozilla 1.6, and all display our favicon perfectly.

Yes, it works in the beginning, but when you take a look in the images directory where the favicons are saved, php.net's favicon is saved as e.g. no2.php.net.bmp instead of no2.php.net.ico.

Because of this, Opera uses php.net's favicon on several sites, and not just for php.net. That's a bug in Opera, but also a problem with the favicon.

Well, if the favicon is saved as mirror.php.net.bmp, then I don't know why it would be displayed for other sites. This is a browser bug then indeed.

Yes, it it a browser bug, but the problem will be fixed with the favicon I linked to. I have also reported this to the Opera developers.

Also note the following:

In Opera, right-click > save image:
  File name: favicon.bmp
  File type: BMP Files

In Firefox, the title says "BMP Picture".

In Internet Explorer, right-click > save image:
  File type: .bmp

I don't think Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera show wrong information about file.
