The configure scsript is hardcoded to search only in */lib for libaries and not as well in */lib64.
No option in configure allow to extend the search path. will be ignored as well.

Reproduce code:
simple configure with extensions like mysql, gd, ldap, imap and so on fails.

Expected result:
Change configure script to search as well in */lib64 or extra flag/option to extend search path, or accept LD_LIBRARY_PATH

bug report already describes this very problem. Even if you feel
that your issue is somewhat different, the resolution is likely
to be the same.
