I ran:

'./configure' '--with-apxs=/usr/local/www/bin/apxs' '--with-config-file-path=/usr/local/www/etc' '--enable-versioning' '--with-system-regex' '--disable-debug' '--enable-track-vars' '--with-gd=/usr/local' '--with-freetype' '--with-zlib' '--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local' '--with-imap' '--with-mysql=/usr/local' '--prefix=/usr/local/www' 'i386--freebsd4.4'

this ran ok

Then I ran MAKE and got the folling error message:

The compile is successful if ./configure --without-imap.

You didn't follow the install instructions at http://www.php.net/imap and this is what you get..

Never EVER install those header files from c-client sources to  
same directories where any other header file exists. 
They're not 'namespace-protected' in any way..
