I am use php as apache module (1.2.6)
with MySQL support, when I use ./Configure script only 
--with-apache=.. --with-mysql=.. In my php3 scripts
dont work ereg,eregi,ereg_replace etc.. functions.

When I Add to ./Configure flag --with-system-regex 
and rebuild my httpd ALL EREG Functions Work Fine!!

That's why you have the option of two different regex implementations.  Looks like you found a setting
that works, why fight it?
