(1) There are multiple instances of hard-coded egrep/'grep -E'. egrep is deprecated, but unfortunately grep with '-E' is not always available with people's default paths under Solaris. So, hard-coded 'grep -E' can cause configuration error messages under Solaris (esp HEAD, maybe not so much with  PHP_4_3).

(2) AC_PROG_CPP appears to do an egrep/'grep -E' test and defines the variable $EGREP. (But this is after PHP_INIT_BUILD_SYSTEM, which itself currently uses extended regex.)

(3) perhaps, sometimes, bare 'grep' may be sufficient.

There are no 'grep -E' calls in the PHP_4_3 branch.

This bug has been fixed in CVS.

In case this was a PHP problem, snapshots of the sources are packaged
every three hours; this change will be in the next snapshot. You can
grab the snapshot at http://snaps.php.net/.
 
In case this was a documentation problem, the fix will show up soon at
http://www.php.net/manual/.

In case this was a PHP.net website problem, the change will show
up on the PHP.net site and on the mirror sites in short time.
