BZIP2 1.0.2 returns with an error message when trying to unpack php-4.2.3.tar.bz2 downloaded from Also tested with bz2 archives downloaded from 3 different mirrors. BZIP2 version 0.9.5d (OLDER) unpacks successfully.

Error message:
bzip2: Data integrity error when decompressing.
        Input file = php-4.2.3.tar.bz2, output file = php-4.2.3.tar

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

bzip2: Deleting output file php-4.2.3.tar, if it exists.
