configure went fine with:
./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs

(Apache is 2.0.40)

then...

# make

Does 4.2.2 work (and forget apache2, just try plain configure/make)

no. 4.2.2 gives me the same error. even on a plain configure/make build.

other messages in the bug database where death has occurred at similar places found that there was an issue with make.

CC=gcc ./configure... gives same result.

The reason I asked was that I suspect this being some problem with your system. Are you able to build it if you
disable ctype? (add --disable-ctype to your configure line)

You are correct in that assessment. This can be closed out as bogus. I lost the @asm softlink in the include directory. Thanks for your help and questions. It lead me to the problem.
