set_cookie() with the path omitted causes problems with Opera 6.02 and Konqueror 3.0.1 also, they get the cookie and save it but never send it to the site.

Opera 6.02 (for Linux) works fine for me. You're probably doing something wrong. Ask support questions on the appropriate mailinglists.
