There was a bug in mkdir() which itself manifested itself first on FreeBSD but which had been fixed in HEAD already. Please give a try, I believe the bug is fixed there.

After compiling snapshot php4-200207090000 it works fine :)
Time for a bug-fixing-release, as current releases of PHP don't work on Tru64 (See also #17449)? File-Functions and Array-Functions are essential functions in my eyes.
