Problem with large files upload with apache-ssl.

This the situation:

All the config (php.ini and httpd.conf)is ok, i'm sure.

I have not memory prob (1Gb of physical RAM)

I have a password-protected directory in which I put my
php files for the upload via https.

When I try to upload large files (~20 Mb), the script doenst work and I found this in the apache-ssl log:

access.log:

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - - [... date ...] "----------10113575816838" 401 - "-" "-"

error.log:

[... date ...] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] user A not found: filename

where A is the PASSWORD (not the user!!!) I use for the HTTP authentication

It is logged and Apache respond with 401 - Authorization required.
