It seems to be a duplicate of at least Bug #17532
 [2002-06-20 01:20 UTC] sniper@php.net
This bug has been fixed in CVS. You can grab a snapshot of the
CVS version at http://snaps.php.net/. In case this was a documentation
problem, the fix will show up soon at http://www.php.net/manual/.
In case this was a PHP.net website problem, the change will show
up on the PHP.net site and on the mirror sites.
Thank you for the report, and for helping us make PHP better.

Setting CC=gcc does not help, the failure occurs furthermore. There is only a warning while configuring:

checking whether the linker (/usr/ccs/bin/ld) supports shared libraries...
*** Warning: Releases of GCC earlier than version 3.0 cannot reliably
*** create self contained shared libraries on Solaris systems, without
*** introducing a dependency on libgcc.a. Therefore, libtool is disabling
*** -no-undefined support, which will at least allow you to build shared
*** libraries. However, you may find that when you link such libraries
*** into an application without using GCC, you have to manually add
*** `gcc --print-libgcc-file-name` to the link command. We urge you to
*** upgrade to a newer version of GCC. Another option is to rebuild your
*** current GCC to use the GNU linker from GNU binutils 2.9.1 or newer.

I used gcc 2.9.1 and binutils-2.11.2 packages
