The problem is actually in the CVS tree, but I cannot select that as the version for this bug.

It seems that the Makefile assumes that the /bin/sh is really bash for install-pear-installer and install-pear-packages which use bash-specific methods (${descfile%.xml} and ${tmp#*-}) of modifying the variables instead of using sed or something else to do it.

Also note that if the directory path has a - in it then the bash variable modification methods do not work correctly either.
