I am not an expert on SOAP/XML questions but according to various web pages (e.g. http://www.php-mag.de/artikel/goebbels_soap.html (Listing 3)) the fault detail decoding in PEAR-SOAP seems to be wrong:

SOAP/Client.php
-  if (stristr($k,'faultdetail')) $faultdetail = $v;
+  if (stristr($k,'detail')) $faultdetail = $v;

After having changed this my SOAP test setup (perl_daemon<->php_client) works fine.
