configure in php 4.1.2 will recognize libmcrypt 2.4.x (tested with libmcrypt 2.4.15/16 and 22) as libmcrypt 2.2.x.
This will cause compile to fail due to some missing #define
php 4.1.1 perfectly works instead (tested with the same libmcrypt versions).

That is really weird, because mcrypt didn't change one single bit. Can you send me your configure.log (or config.log) (privately please)?

PHP 4.1.2 compiles fine, but when I run a test script using libmcrypt it returns: "libmcrypt is 2.2.x" when I am really using libmcrypt 2.4.22. Could this be the same problem?

Yes, it is the same problem :)
