As you can see below, it is placing the source into the extension dir and never compiling the extension.  We performed this on a variety of servers.  Some had 4.4.x version of PHP and other had 5.1.x version of PHP.  In either case, we got the same result.



Reproduce code:

Running on: Linux malifax 2.6.11-hardened-r1 #1 Tue Mar 15 06:04:37 CST 2005 i686
malifax ~ # pecl install spread
Failed to download pecl/spread within preferred state "stable", latest release is version 1.1, stability "beta", use "channel://pecl.php.net/spread-1.1" to install
Cannot initialize 'spread', invalid or missing package file
Package "spread" is not valid
install failed
malifax ~ # pecl install channel://pecl.php.net/spread-1.1
downloading spread-1.1.tgz ...
Starting to download spread-1.1.tgz (5,830 bytes)
.....done: 5,830 bytes
install ok: channel://pear.php.net/spread-1.1
malifax ~ # cd /usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20050922/
malifax ~ # ls
Makefile.in   apc.so        config.m4     memcache.so   package.xml   php_spread.c  php_spread.h


Expected result:
----------------
an installed extension.

Actual result:
--------------
source placed in extension dir.

This bug has been fixed in CVS.

In case this was a documentation problem, the fix will show up at the
end of next Sunday (CET) on pecl.php.net.

In case this was a pecl.php.net website problem, the change will show
up on the website in short time.
