i'm using libmcrypt 2.4.5 on Stronghold 3.0 (Apache 1.3.12). everytime i call mcrypt_generic_init(), a memory leak occurs. calling mcrypt_generic_end() does not free up the memory.

If I recall correctly this is already fixed in later versions. Can you confirm that this bug is solved with php 4.0.4pl1 ? You could also try to use the latest libmcrypt.
