Nested current() does not work.

Reproduce code:
---------------
$a = array(
	'a'=>array('b'=>'c')
	);
echo current(current($a));


Expected result:
----------------
c

Actual result:
--------------
Fatal error: Only variables can be passed by reference in

This code now works under 5.1.  So, is 5.1 broken or was 5.0 borken and this was a bad dismisal of a bug?
