Apache 1.2.5 reports in the error_log the following:
Possible PHP3 memory leak detected (harmless):  4 bytes from functions/string.c:201

but this is not harmless. it eats up all memory and the system crashs.

The leak was fixed.  The crash was unrelated and sorted
out by the user
