Not so much a bug, more a lack of dieing gracefully. If the DATE function does not have quotes around the string format, is causes a core dump.

Works for me just fine. Can you try latest CVS snapshot from 
http://snaps.php.net/ ?? And add some short example code into this 
bug report in case I misunderstood what you meant.

I have tried to replicate the problem for about an hour with no success. I will assume that this problem will only occur in extreme circumstances.
