Description:
------------
Connected to MySQL 8.0.19, having a utf8_general_ci encoded innodb table named users with a field named birthdate of type date, this query fails:

SELECT period_diff(DATE_FORMAT(CURDATE(), '%Y%m'),DATE_FORMAT(birthdate , '%Y%m')) as result from users

with error:

(1210): Incorrect arguments to period_diff

but this identical query, except for the limit clause, works properly:

SELECT period_diff(DATE_FORMAT(CURDATE(), '%Y%m'),DATE_FORMAT(birthdate , '%Y%m')) as result from users limit 0,10

Expected result:
----------------
Both queries are syntactically correct and should run (they DO work properly if issued to the sql server with mysql workbench).

Thank you for this bug report. To properly diagnose the problem, we
need a short but complete example script to be able to reproduce
this bug ourselves.

A proper reproducing script starts with <?php and ends with ?>,
is max. 10-20 lines long and does not require any external
resources such as databases, etc. If the script requires a
database to demonstrate the issue, please make sure it creates
all necessary tables, stored procedures etc.

Please avoid embedding huge scripts into the report.
