From manual page: http://www.php.net/soapclient.soapclient

I found out by testing that PHP accesses properties (regardless of visibility (reflection?)) that match the name of attributes or child elements in the ComplexType definition. In the case of simplecontent, it uses the $_ property for the element content.

If a property with that name does not exist, it asks the object, so __get will be called if it exists.

The problem is that I can't find any of this in the documentation, and I don't know to what extent I can expect this to stay compatible in the future.
