./configure --with-zlib fails:
checking for gzgets in -lz... no
configure: error: Zlib module requires zlib >= 1.0.9.
$ dpkg -l | grep -i zlib
ii  zlib1g              1.1.3-5             compression library - runtime
ii  zlib1g-dev          1.1.3-5             compression library - development

nm shows that the function is present. Don't know why configure can't find it.

Have a look at the end of your config.log, there should be the full error message of the compiler/linker, why the zlib test compile fails.

Often there are unresolved dependencies from libraries used by other extensions (which don't do a test compile run), so if a fix isn't obviously through looking at the end of config.log, please update this bug report with the error of the zlib test compile from config.log and your complete (!) configure line.

Problem disappeared in newer version.
