If that's what you're seeing then your page is using ISO 8859-1/Latin1 encoding when it should be using UTF-8.

header ( "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8" );
print ( html_entity_decode( "&acute;", ENT_COMPAT, 'UTF-8' ) );
