Hi,
  The c-client library used by the imap module provides a mail send capability. I have added a function to do this which works.
It woks but I am not sure of the code. I would be happy to supply my code to the person mostly responsible for the imap module.

imap module has had imap_mail() and
imap_mail_compose() for some time now
(although at least imap_mail_compose() is
still somehow buggy)
but as a feature request this one 
deserve a 'close'
