From manual page:
"... The maximum number of captured substrings is 99, and the maximum number of all subpatterns, both capturing and non-capturing, is 200 ..."

Via twitter: The limit was changed in PCRE 3.5 - PHP now [feb. 2014] uses PCRE 8.34 ^^ Looks like the docs are *slightly* outdated :)
