From manual page:

Information is missing about since which version of PHP imagecreatefromgif()
correctly handles all paths. This is VITAL and must be specified.

Prior to some version X of PHP, imagecreatefromgif doesn't handle correctly
paths like "/foo/bar/../myfolder/myfile.gif". It gives a bogus error message
saying the file is not a valid gif file.
Starting from version X, it works as expected in all cases and resolves such
path to the correct path, e.g. "/foo/myfolder/myfile.gif".

X is somewhere between 5.1.6 and 5.4.6.

I guess the same happens with all imagecreatefrom*()

The PHP manual is no longer supposed to document PHP 5 behavior.
