PCRE also allows "\g" to use "<name>". I don't know since which version of PHP, but going by the existing documentation it should have been between 5.2.2 and 5.2.4. Please make note of this in the documentation.

Indeed, \g<name> is not documented yet. The feature is available
since 5.2.7.[1]

Thanks for the patch! I just checked \g'name' and that can be used too. I got the same results by checking the link you provided (PHP==4.4.9 and PHP>=5.2.7).

This bug has been fixed in the documentation's XML sources. Since the
online and downloadable versions of the documentation need some time
to get updated, we would like to ask you to be a bit patient.
