I have tried to compile the Pecl using phpize, which works fine, it is not until I try to compile it with 'make' command that I get an error. 

installed is: 

php 5.2.6
php5-dev
pear 1.7.2


Reproduce code:

in the uncompressed directory 

root#> phpize
root#> make 

Expected result:

compiled code ready to install

What version of spread are you building against?

Assume this is fixed from fix for bug #18003
