According to parameters description, default value for parameter $deref
should be set to constant LDAP_DEREF_NEVER in the prototype.

LDAP_DEREF_NEVER is not the default value for the function parameter. If $deref is 
not specified, the existing LDAP_OPT_DEREF value is used (if set), falling back to 
the default value for that option which is LDAP_DEREF_NEVER.
